Geneva Association appoints Atchinson as acting head of Institutional Relations

Monday, March 28, 2011

Geneva, Switzerland – March 24, 2011 – The Geneva Association has announced the appointment of former President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and former Superintendent of Insurance for the US State of Maine, Brian Atchinson, as acting head of Institutional Relations. In this role, Brian will be based in Washington D.C. and will lead and direct the international institutional and public affairs outreach of The Geneva Association.

Brian began his work in the financial services field in 1989 as Legal Counsel to the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation in Augusta, ME. In 1992 he became the Superintendent of Insurance for the US State of Maine, supervising local insurers and insurance as well as the dynamic interface between insurance and politics.

In 1994 Brian was elected an Officer and later President of NAIC where amongst other roles he was Chairman of the International Insurance Relations Committee. During his work at the NAIC he also advanced the creation of a new international coordinating body for insurance regulators, the now familiar International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) where he served as US representative on the Executive Committee and was later honoured for his outstanding achievements.

In 1997, Brian became Managing Counsel and vice president of the UNUM Corporation where, inter alia, he managed international trade and regulatory issues, in conjunction with company presence in the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Argentina, Mexico, Germany, Bermuda and Japan. He also supported the successful 1997 negotiations to bring financial services within the World Trade Organization "General Agreement on Trade in Services" as a member of the US Industry Sector Advisory Committee. In 2001, Brian became president and ceo of the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association (IMSA) where he worked until the end of 2010. As the ceo of IMSA, Brian drove the strategy and operations of a voluntary market conduct compliance organisation whose purpose is to protect the public interest and to enhance the insurance buyer's perception through the promotion of high standards of business conduct in the life insurance marketplace. During this time he extended his already extensive ties with regulators, supervisors and policy-makers, both in the US and abroad.

Atchinson said "I am delighted to be working with The Geneva Association and I look forward to leveraging the Association's unique work to increase the understanding and prominence of insurance amongst international and institutional stakeholders."
