New faces join UAC board

Wednesday, December 09, 2009

Sydney, Australia – December 9, 2009 – There are three new faces on the Underwriting Agencies Council board, following the annual general meeting in Sydney last week.

Jo Lindsay-Eschbank, Manager - Northern Region, Resource Underwriting Pacific, has been elected a director.

Linda King, Director, Sterling Insurance, and Eric Richardson, General Manager, Altiora Insurance Solutions, have agreed to join the board as associate directors.

The following current directors were re-elected: Damien Coates, Managing Director, Dual Australia; John Iles, Director, Specialist Underwriting Agencies; David Porter, Managing Director, AFA; and William Legge, CEO, Aurora Underwriting Agency.

Current directors Simon Trowell, Director, Sportscover Australia; Heath Amber, Director, Millennium; and Frank Van Rooy, Underwriting Principal, Australis Care; were not required to stand for re-election.

Former director Kevin Corkery, from Lawsons Underwriting, stepped down at the AGM to allow him to focus more on his business.

UAC chairman Damien Coates welcomed the new director and associate directors and thanked Mr. Corkery for the excellent job he did while serving on the board. “In particular, I thank Kevin for his tireless work in assisting to organise the UAC-NIBA expos, which has been a major task.”

The AGM voted in favour of accepting the financial report, which is available on the UAC website, www.uac.org.au.

Mr. Coates presented the findings of a comprehensive membership survey, conducted as part of membership renewals, at the AGM.

He said the findings demonstrated the strength of the agencies sector in the Australian insurance marketplace.

“Agencies’ gross written premium is substantial, with a third of member companies writing more than $20 million a year (excluding statutory charges). An analysis of the figures shows the likely total premium pool for agencies is about $2.5 billion a year,” Mr Coates said.

“This shows the agency market is more significant than had previously been recognised.”

While the survey showed the majority of UAC member agencies employ 10 or fewer staff, two respondents have more than 60. An analysis of the data shows the total number of employees in the sector is likely to be about 1,800.
